Masterlang - Learn a new language while watching movies

0 ratings

What if you could learn a new language while watching your favourite TV shows and movies?

"When you’re still learning the language and watching subtitles, there’s gonna be times when you don’t understand some words or the general meaning of a dialogue. In my time, if I may say, I used to simply use a dictionary. But Masterlang makes the process faster because by just pressing the space bar on your keyboard, it gives a side by side translation of the subtitles. It’s such a timesaver because it means that you don’t have to pause your show for ages to look up the word in a dictionary."

Why Masterlang?

In 2016 my own startup failed and I was on the lookout for a new job.
I had just moved to London and I struggled to confidently have a conversation. On a phone call with recruiters, I was able to get just about one third of what they said.
Many words and expressions were far from what I had studied back in school. The pronunciation was quite different from the one my non-native teacher taught me.
Accommodations in London were quite expensive and I had probably 3-4 months of runway.

It was back then that I turned to Netflix for help. Watching movies with subtitles became just my favourite activity. Whenever there was a part of the dialogue I couldn't understand I paused the movie, translated the word with my phone and then write it back into a notebook.
That notebook grew quite fast and in a few weeks I could see myself getting more and more confident both when speaking and listening to someone. About a month later I managed to get a job in one of the fastest-growing startups in London as a Front-end engineer.

I've built Masterlang to support whoever is on the same journey. If you need to learn a new language because you are looking for a new job, moving to a different country or just to talk to your crush, Masterlang can get you there.

How it works?

Pause to translate

Pause the movie to translate the subtitle to your favourite language.

Dive deeper into each word

Besides the translation of the subtitle, you get a per-word pop-up dictionary showing the pronunciation, synonyms and verb conjugation (where possible).

Build your own vocabulary

Add what you've just learnt to your personal vocabulary and challenge yourself later. You can review your vocabulary within the app, via email or export it to flashcards to your favourite apps (compatible with Anki, Quizlet, Tinycards, Brainscape and others)

Reviews

"On top of very quickly giving you the translation of the subtitles, it also allows you to save words or whole sentences which you then receive by email the next day. That can be a nice alternative to the typical 'stop the show and write it down' because you can decide not to worry about the phrase at the moment and simply save it for review at a later time."
